The Comprehensive Scientific-Applied University Kahrizak Nursing Home for the Disabled and Elderly, the first specialized university for elderly and disabled care in the country, was established in 2017 under the guidance of the Late Dr. Mostafa Naraghi Charity Foundation. This visionary initiative was led by Ms. Farvardin Tahbaz, Ms. Nahaleh Naraghi, and Dr. Ali Nasr Naraghi, utilizing a building donated by the foundation, spanning 1,200 square meters.
Today, the university offers education in elderly care along with seven disciplines related to nursing and social work, taught by experienced instructors at the associate and bachelor’s degree levels.

Ms. Ashraf Qandehari Bahadorzadeh was one of the philanthropists who, from the very inception of the idea in 1973, supported the elderly and disabled by establishing the “Charitable Women’s Group” for the Kahrizak Care Center. Today, more than four thousand charitable women actively and consistently collaborate with the Kahrizak Care Center as part of this group.

Pioneering Education

The Comprehensive Scientific-Applied University Kahrizak Nursing Home for the Disabled and Elderly, the first specialized university for elderly and disabled care in the country, was established in 2017 through the efforts of the late Dr. Mostafa Naraghi Charity Foundation. This initiative was spearheaded by Ms. Farvardin Tahbaz, Ms. Nahaleh Naraghi, and Dr. Ali Nasr Naraghi in a building donated by the foundation, covering a total area of 1,200 square meters.

A Remarkable Initiative

Meanwhile, the Naraghi Charity, as a pioneering and long-standing partner of the Kahrizak Care Center and the Comprehensive Scientific-Applied University Kahrizak, made a significant contribution by constructing the second phase of the university building on a 1,200-square-meter site. This expansion included the construction and equipping of educational classrooms, practical workshops, an auditorium, and other new facilities aimed at enhancing education in elderly care and improving their welfare.

Explosion of Elderly Population in Iran

Ageing populations

Studies show Iran’s population is rapidly aging, exceeding global averages in demographic shifts. Between 1950 and 2020, the elderly population in Iran increased sixfold. By 2041, 20% of Iran’s population is projected to be elderly, with this figure rising to 30% by 2051.

Third of the Nation's Population Pyramid

Without adequate preparation, the aging trend could result in severe economic, social, and cultural consequences. In response, the Naraghi Charity Foundation and the Kahrizak Care Center have established Iran’s first university dedicated to aging, laying the groundwork for innovation in education and care for the elderly.

the challenges ahead

With a shortage of skilled professionals, Kahrizak University is taking the lead in training specialists to improve elderly care, ensuring their physical and mental well-being, while alleviating caregiver stress.

From Dr. Naraghi's Cultural and Educational Center

to the First Specialized University of Aging in Iran

In the 1990s (1370s in the Persian calendar), the Dr. Mostafa Naraghi Cultural and Educational Center was established at the Kahrizak Elderly Care Home to update the scientific and educational standards of Kahrizak’s staff and residents. Its purpose was to enhance scientific synergy regarding the issues and challenges faced by the elderly and disabled while aligning its staff and specialists with the latest advancements in social work, psychology, and counseling in line with global knowledge.

At the beginning of 2021 (1400 in the Persian calendar), the Dr. Naraghi Foundation, in collaboration with Kahrizak’s management, decided to expand the existing educational space. They upgraded and expanded the Dr. Naraghi Cultural and Educational Center into the Kahrizak Modular Applied Science and Technology Center. By adhering to the academic standards of the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology, as well as the curricula defined by the Ministry of Health, Treatment, and Medical Education, this center was transformed into a university, aiming to contribute to the development and enhancement of the country’s cultural landscape.

Kahrizak University of Applied Sciences,

"A Progressive Outlook for Iran's Aging Population"

With the growing elderly population and the lack of aging education centers in the country, especially clinical-based centers, the need to establish an aging university is entirely evident and urgently requires expansion. The Kahrizak Center has so far succeeded in training and providing its required workforce and significantly increasing the quality of elderly care services, especially for bedridden seniors in the care center.

Comprehensive Scientific-Applied University Kahrizak Center is led by Dr. Hassan Ahmadi, who has also been serving as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kahrizak Charity Foundation since 2009. This university, utilizing modern educational programs and experienced instructors, teaches students the necessary skills for elderly care, enabling them to join the workforce as specialized and skilled professionals to serve the growing elderly and disabled population in the country.

Since its first admissions in 2019, the university has expanded its programs to include associate and bachelor’s degrees in fields like Social Work, Elderly Care, and Financial Management. Currently, 330 students are enrolled, and over 300 graduates are already contributing to care facilities nationwide.

The university’s vision is to achieve national leadership in elderly care education, research, and innovation. With continued dedication from its administrators, students, and supporters, this goal is well within reach.

With the unwavering support of Dr. Naraghi's family, today, over 350 students are studying in eight academic fields specializing in social work. This effort aims to enrich the future of the healthcare system by assisting those in need, ensuring it progresses in alignment with modern knowledge.

The building of the Dr. Naraghi Cultural and Educational Center, which has now evolved into a unique university specializing in various fields of aging and disability, is being completed across two separate floors, encompassing a total area of 2,400 square meters with state-of-the-art educational facilities. The Applied Science Center admits 50% of its students from the general population, and it dedicates half of its space to educating and training the country’s young and capable workforce.

Training Over 300 Specialists in Elderly and Disabled Care

On average, 60% of the students at the center are staff members of the Kahrizak nursing home, while the remaining students come from outside Kahrizak. Alongside its educational activities, this center also plays an active role in research and cultural fields. Additionally, several national-level startups are operating at the center, focusing on autism education for children and designing clothing for the elderly and disabled.

Since 2020, more than 300 graduates from this center, in addition to serving the Kahrizak Complex, have been employed in other organizations and social work institutions, utilizing their skills in supporting and assisting the elderly and disabled. Currently, around 330 students are studying at the associate and bachelor’s degree levels at the center.

The future vision of the Comprehensive Scientific-Applied University Kahrizak, named after the esteemed late Dr. Mostafa Naraghi, is to achieve national scientific leadership in the fields of education, research, and innovative technologies in providing services to the elderly and disabled.

This noble goal, with the efforts of the administrators, professors, and hardworking students of this university, the Kahrizak charity organization, and the unwavering support of Dr. Naraghi’s family, will be realized in the near future.
